History

First founded as Turkish State Airlines on May 20, 1933, Turkish Airlines was a division of the Ministry of National Defense. Two five-seat Curtiss Kingbirds, two four-seat Junkers F 13s, and one ten-seat Tupolev ANT-9 made up the airline’s first fleet. The airline was renamed the General Directorate of State Airlines after it was transferred to the Ministry of Public Works in 1935. 1938, three years later, saw its incorporation into the Ministry of Transportation.

Istanbul Atatürk Airport opened a new terminal in January 2000. As part of their continuous worldwide expansion, Turkish Airlines inked marketing agreements with Asiana Airlines, American Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Czech Airlines, and Cathay Pacific in 2000. On October 29, 2000, THY departed the Swissair-led Qualiflyer alliance in an attempt to attract a significant investor for their privatisation. The airline has been a part of the alliance’s frequent flyer programme since November 1998.A code-sharing agreement with Sun Express made it possible to add a route between Antalya and Frankfurt in 2001.

Turkish Airlines predicted a loss of 10 million passengers for the year 2016, and in August of that same year, the airline revealed a loss of 198 million euros, with a decline in profit in the second quarter. Turkish Airlines reported record overall losses for the first half of 2016 of 1.9 billion Turkish Lira, or $644,4 million.

The airline stated in 2020 that it would be shifting its international routes at Sabiha Gokcen Airport to its low-cost subsidiary, AnadoluJet, in order to withdraw from these routes.

Turkish Airlines announced in February 2023 that it intended to split off AnadoluJet as an independent airline from an incorporated brand.
