History
UMGC Phone NumberThe University of Maryland’s adult evening programme, which got its start in the 1920s, gave rise to UMGC. The College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) opened its doors in 1947. In 1959, The CSCS became the University of Maryland University College (UMUC). UMUC was established as an independent institution in 1970, and in 1988 it became a founding member of the University System of Maryland.
UMUC formerly had an international campus in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany, (near Stuttgart), until 2002. Additionally, it operated a two-year residential campus in Munich, Germany, from 1950 until 1992. From 1993 to 1994, it relocated to Augsburg, Germany; in 1995, it moved to Mannheim, Germany, and closed in 2005. The residential campus, which specialised in serving high school graduates of American military and government personnel stationed in Europe provided a two-year associate degree to its clientele.
By 2023, UMGC will have more than 175 service and classroom locations spread across the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, including military installations and other educational facilities. In 2004, the International Council for Open and Distance Education awarded UMUC with a shared ICDE Prize of Excellence.

UMGC operates education centres and provides online instruction, specialising in distance learning for adult non-traditional students in Maryland, the United States, and worldwide. The university welcomed nearly 53,000 international students with military ties in FY 2023. Over 32,000 Marylanders attended UMGC in FY 2023.
Approximately 75% of undergraduate students enrol part-time. More than 92% of UMGC students hold a full-time job. Women make up the bulk of undergraduate students.
