Celebrity Cruises: History
To run upscale cruise ships to Bermuda, the Greece-based Chandris Group established Celebrity Cruises as a subsidiary in April 1988. Since the 1960s, Chandris has been involved in the cruise industry. In the late 1980s, the company operated in the US market under the name Chandris Cruises. With fleets made up of used ocean liners, Chandris Fantasy Cruises catered to the budget-conscious cruise passenger market. When Holland America Line purchased Home Lines, one of the top premium cruise lines in the world at the time, in April 1988, Celebrity Cruises was born.
In April 1988, Chandris founded Celebrity Cruises and started negotiating with the Bermuda government right away to secure the contracts. Following the talks, Celebrity Cruises was given the go-ahead to acquire two ships for five years starting in 1990. Rebuilt in 1989 at Lloyd Werft, Germany, to satisfy the contract, Chandris Fantasy Cruises’ Galileo returned to service in February 1990 as the SS Meridian for Celebrity Cruises.

Celebrity Cruises placed Horizon, its second ship, into service in May 1990 after adding it to its fleet. In the Chandris Fantasy fleet, Horizon was first ordered in 1988 to replace Amerikanis. It would be the first specially designed unit on the line. In late 1990, Celebrity Cruises placed an order for the 1992 delivery of Zenith, the sister ship of Horizon.
