History

Artist, sculptor, and museum operator Rembrandt Peale (1778–1860) established the ‘Gas Light Company of Baltimore’ on June 17, 1816, following his exhibition of gas lighting at his Holliday Street museum. Designed by well-known local architect Robert Cary Long Jr., the museum opened its doors in 1814. The Americas’ first gas firm was this one. It had performed some functions, such as serving as Baltimore’s City Hall from 1830 until 1875 and as the

On February 7, 1817, the Gas Light Company of Baltimore ignited the first streetlamp they had ever placed at the intersection of North Holliday and East Baltimore streets. There were just 28 gas-lit lamps in use by February 1818. Originally, the Belvidere Theatre, a public building, employed gas lighting. The business experimented with metres, pipes, and other mechanical technologies throughout the ensuing decades. By 1851, Baltimore promised to provide gas lines in every public market and provide gas for municipal usage. Additionally, private subscription grew gradually; by 1870, the business had 15,301 clients in Baltimore.

The business changed its name to Baltimore Gas and Electric in 1955. Later in the 1990s, people started to recognise the acronym BGE. The Maryland Public Service Commission authorised Exelon’s 2015 acquisition of Pepco Holdings, putting Baltimore Gas and Power under shared management with the state’s second and third-largest power companies. Exelon completed the purchase of Pepco Holdings in 2016.

Q. BGE’s Smart Energy Savers Programme: What is it?

Ans. The Smart Energy Savers Programme from BGE is a group of intelligent decisions that can help you save energy, cut costs, and protect the environment. Together with you, our valued consumers, we are striving to achieve these aims by offering a range of programmes, services, and incentives.

Q. Which advantages does the BGE Smart Energy Savers Programme offer?

Ans. Through BGE’s Smart Energy Savers Programme, customers can control how much energy they consume, potentially leading to more economical electricity use and lower energy bills. Together, the projects help reduce energy expenditures and improve reliability. They also help to minimise peak demand and slow down the growth in energy consumption, which reduces the need for more power plants.

Q. Why is there a premium that BGE consumers must pay?

Ans. These initiatives help every BGE client. The primary goals of the BGE Smart Energy Savers Programme were to assist individual consumers in saving money, enhancing dependability, and safeguarding the environment. Customers can take advantage of a range of savings opportunities offered by the programme, from small-scale LED bulbs to large-scale ENERGY STAR refrigerators and electric heat pumps, including rebates, discounts, and incentives. On the surface, the older models—such as the incandescent bulb—might seem more affordable, but over the course of the equipment’s lifetime, the investment will save more money and energy.
