A Social Security Board (SSB) was established under the Social Security Act to supervise the new program’s management. On August 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act of 1935, establishing it as a component of his New Deal. The Board, which had three executives nominated by the president, had no funding, personnel, or furnishings when it first began. Harry Hopkins’ Federal Emergency Relief Administration provided it with a short-term budget. Thomas Elliott was one of Felix Frankfurter’s “happy hot dogs” and the first lawyer for the new organisation.

On October 14, 1936, the first Social Security office opened its doors in Austin, Texas. January 1937 saw the beginning of Social Security tax collection as well as the first lump-sum payments. Ida May Fuller of Brattleboro, Vermont, was the first person to receive monthly retirement payments. Her first cheque, for US$22.54, was dated January 31, 1940.

Offices in the Field

More than 1,200 community-based field offices make up the SSA network. 43 million people visited these field offices in the 2019 fiscal year in order to apply for benefits, obtain an original or replacement Social Security card, or obtain other services. In April 2022, field offices returned following a two-year closure due to the Covid-19 epidemic. SSA provides a field office locating service, where members of the public may discover office phone numbers and addresses.

In addition, SSA offers services via its website and a national toll-free hotline (1-800-772-1213). Applications for disability and retirement benefits are available online. However, the public must apply in person at the SSA by calling or visiting in person for survivor benefits. Most states allow people to apply online for a replacement Social Security card.

The SSA’s field offices also accept applications from the general public for Supplemental Security Income. When SSI applicants apply for food assistance through the SNAP programme, field office workers will also help them with that process.

Which SSDI Benefits Are Available?

SSDI is a financial benefit that is awarded to eligible disabled workers and their families. Your eligibility for SSDI compensation will be based on your prior salary. The SSDI monthly benefit amount that you will get in 2024 might vary from $100 to $3,822. Most SSDI claimants get between $800 and $1,800 per month, with the average individual disability payout around $1,537 per month.

Even though SSDI is not an income-based programme, receiving workers’ compensation state disability benefits may result in a reduction in the amount of your disability payout. However, obtaining SSI (Supplemental Security Income), veterans’ benefits, or private disability insurance won’t lower the amount of your SSDI compensation.

In addition to monthly cash compensation, Medicare will provide healthcare benefits if you meet the eligibility requirements for SSDI. Your spouse and any dependents may also be eligible for SSDI benefits. Find out more about obtaining benefits from SSDI for your household.

Learn the difference between SSDI and SSI

  • SSDI is linked to your employment history. Benefits are paid to you and certain family members if you:
    • possess a disability and
    • worked long enough to be eligible and throughout your employment, you paid Social Security taxes
  • An employment history is not necessary to be eligible for SSI. If you are 65 years of age or older, or if you have a handicap, it gives you money for necessities like food, clothes, and shelter.

How does SSDI work?

For those who have a condition that prevents them from working for a year or more, the Social Security Administration (SSA) pays monthly SSDI benefits. Because of the rigorous definition of disability set by the SSA, conditions that may be considered impairments by other organisations or programmes are not covered.

Payments will be made electronically to your bank account via direct deposit or onto a Direct Express Debit Mastercard if you are eligible for SSDI. A recipient could be permitted to receive benefits in ways other than through electronic payments in very unusual circumstances. The payments are made every month.

The SSA will periodically examine your handicap and how it affects your capacity to work. Whether your impairment is likely to become better and allow you to go back to work will determine how frequently it reviews your condition. You may keep receiving SSDI payments as long as you are unable to work regularly due to a qualifying health condition.
