History
In March 2015, Dan Manges and Alex Timm created Root Insurance.
The company’s co-founder Manges retired as CTO in 2021, however, he continued to serve as a consultant until December of that same year. Carvana and Root signed a partnership agreement in August 2021 for the development of customized auto insurance for Carvana’s car-buying marketplace. This was the first embedded partner for Root Insurance.
The agreement, which was first based on Carvana’s $126 million investment for a 5% share in Root, has rights that can be exercised in tranches or at certain points in time. The partnership develops an embedded experience for clients buying cars with Carvana by utilizing the technologies of both firms.
Root and BlackRock finalized the terms of a $300 million, five-year term loan in January 2022. This term loan matures on January 27, 2027. Daniel Rosenthal, the Chief Revenue and Operating Officer of Root Insurance, resigned on March 23, 2023. Rosenthal began his tenure as a director of Root Insurance in 2017.
Pros & Cons

How Root Auto Insurance Operates
When determining rates, the majority of firms mainly use your driving record, credit score, and demographic data. Root does as well, but it takes that information into account less heavily, meaning that a larger portion of your quotation is determined by how you drive during your two- to three-week Trial Run.
Here’s how it works:
- Enrol in a Test Drive. You have two options for starting: go to Root’s website or download the app to start the quote process.
- Give Root permission to monitor your driving habits to receive a customized quotation. To track driving behaviors such as hard braking, turn speed, miles driven, driving routes, and time of day you drive, you will need to provide the app access to your phone’s GPS. According to Root, the app uses machine learning to determine if you are a passenger, therefore you shouldn’t be held responsible for the actions of another driver while you are in their vehicle.
- If Root chooses to cover you, get a quote. Once monitoring is activated, Root will reply to your request for coverage with a quote or reject it. The company states clearly on its website that it only insures “good” drivers and that many drivers are turned down for a quotation. Root can charge cheaper rates overall by removing high-risk drivers from its customer pool.

Is Root a reliable provider of insurance?
To assist you in locating the best auto insurance, Bankrate’s insurance editorial team examined more than 100 insurers. Root Insurance may offer drivers the reliable mobile and web platform they need to manage their auto insurance requirements. Not every motorist will be eligible for coverage due to its stringent eligibility rules and requirements for a test drive. If they do, though, their rates might be primarily determined by their driving prowess rather than by variables like age or credit score (though this hasn’t been completely phased out yet).
Root does not underwrite policies directly, but it does have a collaboration with Homesite for people who also want home insurance coverage. This may be inconvenient for policyholders because it would mean they couldn’t use the Root app to manage their home insurance.
Core contentment with customers
Finding out how pleased clients are with an insurance company’s customer service and insurance offerings may be useful when evaluating it. This could help you get a sense of what it might be like to possess insurance. Aside from J.D. Power, AM Best, Standard & Poor’s, and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), other organizations may offer more information about client satisfaction and financial stability. To learn more about current policyholders’ experiences with a carrier, you can also think about having a conversation with them. Root is neither rated nor scored by J.D. Power or AM Best, and there is little information accessible about customer satisfaction with the company.
Study or Rating agency | Root | Industry average |
---|---|---|
2023 J.D. Power Digital Experience Study – Service | Not scored | 702/1,000 |
2023 J.D. Power Digital Experience Study – Shopping | Not scored | 521/1,000 |
