Criticism

Animal rights

PETA vowed to present a shareholder resolution in 2005, 2008, and 2010 calling on the company to raise its standards for animal welfare. It made an effort to halt five particular animal experiments in 2005 because it thought they were “crude and cruel”. PETA voiced its opposition to the outsourcing of animal testing to nations like China that have weak regulations protecting animal welfare in 2008. 2010 saw an effort by PETA to put an end to Medtronic’s alleged use of live animals for training and testing.

In response, Medtronic carried out a feasibility analysis and discovered. It would be impossible to forbid the use of live animals. Medtronic said in 2015. It would explore alternatives going forward, although it still used live animals for training and testing. After discussing each situation with Medtronic’s shareholders, PETA withdrew its shareholder resolution.

Ireland-based tax inversion

With the acquisition of Irish-based Covidien (a prior U.S. tax inversion to Ireland in 2007) for $42.9 billion in cash and stock, Medtronic stated in June 2014 that it would carry out a tax inversion to Ireland. By moving its legal headquarters to Ireland and keeping its executive and operational offices in the United States, Medtronic was able to take advantage of Ireland’s advantageous low corporation tax structure and avoid paying taxes on almost $14 billion in foreign assets. This was made possible by the tax inversion. Given the modifications made to the U.S. tax legislation in 2016 to prevent the Pfizer-Allergan Irish tax inversion. Medtronic’s tax inversion is currently the largest in history and is probably going to stay that way.

Reaction to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022

Medtronic declined to leave the Russian market and join the international community during the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Yale University research, revised on April 28, 2022, categorised how corporations were responding to Russia’s invasion. Medtronic was found to be in the worst category, “Digging In,” which refers to companies who are refusing pleas to leave or reducing their activity.
