History
To meet the electricity needs of the expanding Tampa town, Colonel Peter O. Knight founded Tampa Electric Company in 1899. Constructed on Jackson Street, the Peter O. plant was a steam-producing facility erected in 1903. Knight Station, 1969. The first turbo-generator was constructed in 1906. The Tampa Electric Company advertised electric lights, fans, and more than 20 miles of track that connected Tampa, Ybor City, and Ballast Point during the beginning of the 20th century.
At the intersection of Cass and Tampa Street, modern downtown offices first opened their doors in 1914. By the end of the 20th century, Tampa Electric and its parent company, TECO Energy, employed over 5,000 men and women in six states and South America. On September 4, 2015, Emera, a utility holding company based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, declared its intention to purchase TECO Energy.
