Aeromexico origins
Businessman Antonio Díaz Lombardo purchased a Stinson SR-5A, registration NC14163, in May 1934. He then chose military pilot Julio Zinser to fly Aeromexico’s first commercial aircraft. The airline operated its first commercial flight, carrying four passengers and crew members, on September 14, 1934. Over the following three months, Aeromexico flew multiple flights to Mexican locations, including Tehuacan, Puebla, Ometepec, and Oaxaca.
Mexico already had a second domestic carrier by then. On July 12, 1921, Mexicana de Aviación began operating flights. For a long while, the national flag carriers were flown by Mexicana and Aeromexico. They are still revered as a symbol of Mexico among tourists (Mexicana closed its doors in 2010).
Under the name Aeronaves de México, Aeromexico continued to operate domestically for the first twenty years of its existence. Pan American World Airways purchased 25% of Aeromexico from Díaz Lombardo in 1941. Aeromexico was able to expand further and finally begin international flights thanks to the US carrier.
Travelling Abroad by Air
There were fifteen aircraft in Aeromexico’s fleet in 1955: twelve DC-3s, two DC-4s, and one C-47 cargo. A few years later, Mexico City was connected to New York and Los Angeles by the Mexican carrier’s first international routes.
The Mexican government took Aeromexico over in 1959. With a fleet of 22 aircraft that operated to 23 destinations, the firm acquired DC-8 aircraft in the 1960s and used two Comet IVs to create connectivity with Europe. The Mexican airline operated flights to cities including Caracas, Bogota, Madrid, and Panama City. Aeronaves de Mexico finally transformed into Aeromexico in 1971.
SkyTeam
In June 2000, Air France, Delta Air Lines, Korean Air, and Aeromexico formed the SkyTeam alliance when the airline was still governed by the government. Since Aeromexico opened up the Latin American and Caribbean markets at the alliance’s inception, its presence was crucial to SkyTeam’s current status as the second-largest alliance despite being the youngest.
Along with updating its fleet, Aeromexico took delivery of its first Boeing 737-700 in 2003. A few years later, in 2007, Aeromexico was acquired by a consortium of private investors, which enabled the airline to grow dramatically.

Aeromexico’s fleet and future
Over the past ten years, Aeromexico has faced competition from the nation’s burgeoning low-cost carriers. Aeromexico is no longer the largest domestic operator in Mexico, even though it has the largest fleet. Rather, Viva Aerobus has surpassed Volaris in market share, and the carrier now sits third in its native market. Due to the severe COVID-19 pandemic, Aeromexico filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the United States.
But the carrier made a comeback in 2022, leaving Chapter 11 bankruptcy and starting up again. Since then, it has also gradually expanded its fleet, going from 122 aircraft in 2021 to 146 as of October 2023. The fleet is made up of:
