History

YMCA Phone Number: George Williams and eleven friends founded the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). Like many young men drawn to the cities by the Industrial Revolution, Williams worked as a draper in London. The options available to young men in major cities were typically taverns and brothels, which worried them about the lack of healthy activities. Williams’ inspiration originated from prayer and Bible-reading meetings he conducted with his coworkers in a London business. On June 6, 1844, he hosted the inaugural meeting that resulted in the establishment of the YMCA. “Improving the spiritual condition of young men engaged in the drapery, embroidery, and other trades” was the founding organization’s goal. From 1851 until his passing in 1885, Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, presided over the YMCA as its first president.

In 1845, the YMCA began a well-liked lecture series that ran until 1865. Beginning in 1848, the lectures were held at Exeter Hall in London, and the following year, they began to be published. The YMCA was linked to industrialization and the migration of young people seeking employment in urban areas. Preaching in public and handing out religious pamphlets were combined with a social ministry by the YMCA. Benefactors viewed them as locations for healthy entertainment that would shield children from the allures of alcohol, drugs, and prostitution while also encouraging good citizenship.”

Vision

The world envisioned by the YMCA is one in which each individual coexists peacefully with the environment, society, and themselves. Its goal is to enable youth and communities around the globe to create a world. A world like that is fair, sustainable, and inclusive. Just so that everyone can live a healthy, happy, and fulfilling life. Its mission is to become the go-to global organisation for youth empowerment. And also partner of choice by energising, motivating, and empowering youth to identify. They voice the issues that are important to them and the rest of the world. Community Wellbeing, Meaningful Work, Sustainable Planet, and Just World are its four primary operating domains.

The YMCA supports young people in improving their lives, communities, and the wider world. Among the biggest and most established youth organisations globally, it is the oldest one. Since its founding in London in 1844, it has expanded to over 65 million users annually throughout 120 countries. It employs close to 90,000 people, has about 920,000 volunteers, and 12,000 branches globally.

The Core Values of YMCA

YMCA Phone Number: The five guiding principles of the YMCA are inclusivity, accountability, honesty, respect, and caring. The following is a breakdown of the core values of the YMCA:

Caring:

The YMCA places a high importance on compassion, love, selflessness, empathy, and lending a hand to those in need. For instance, in January 2021, the Park Slope Armoury YMCA and Prospect Park YMCA collaborated on a food drive. The two YMCAs gathered food for Brooklyn’s Camp Friendship Food Pantry. A shelter for the destitute and weaker members of society.

Honesty:

Through several programmes, the organisation instils in children and youth the values of integrity and truth in its operations. The local YMCA in Chicago offers educational programmes at 15 different locations throughout the city to support children in gaining self-assurance, character, and Y values among them, the value of honesty in life.

Respect:

The CEOs of national and local associations support the idea that everyone should be treated with respect, which is a principle upheld by all YMCAs worldwide. Camp Tecumseh YMCA’s new CEO, Joel Sieplinga, said, “I am humbled to follow so many great leaders of Camp Tecumseh and help people grow in the areas of initiative, trust, respect, joy, friendship, and faith.”

Responsibilities:

The YMCA attempts to guarantee that every young person in the world has an equal opportunity to fulfil their potential. YMCAs on local, national, and regional levels take their responsibilities and social responsibility very seriously. Through initiatives, they develop responsible young adults who will make a good contribution to their communities.

Inclusiveness:

The YMCA does not discriminate based on race, gender, religion, or socioeconomic status; rather, it serves the interests of all young people. The organisation actively seeks to foster goodwill amongst generations and religions. For instance, the Spencer Family YMCA organises a fundraising event every holiday season to provide holiday cheer to senior living facilities. The YMCA gave 400 wreaths to Asbury Heights senior citizens for Christmas 2020.
