History

United MileagePlus Phone Number: Texas International Airlines introduced frequent flier programmes in 1979. American Airlines debuted its AAdvantage program two years later, and United debuted Mileage Plus a week later. United formally renamed the programme Mileage Plus on June 29, 2011, replacing Mileage Plus.

Tom Stuker became the first MileagePlus member to reach ten million miles flown on United on July 9, 2011. He received this honour while travelling from Los Angeles to Chicago on flight 942. Then-United president and CEO Jeff Smisek was present to congratulate him. He received the exclusive United Titanium Card and had his name put on the side of a Boeing 747-400 operated by United as recognition for reaching the ten million mile mark. Since then, Stuker has surpassed the 20 million mile mark and is still the most frequent flyer in the world.

The MileagePlus programme underwent several controversial changes following its 2012 merger with Continental OnePass. This included Premier Silver members’ inability to reserve Economy Plus seats until 24 hours before departure, and the reduction of bonus miles for Premier Gold and Premier Platinum members. The elites are still being processed through the upgrade waitlist, but upgrades can now be purchased at check-in for as little as $69; the upgrade process has also changed. Million Mile Flyer George Lagen sued United in late May 2012 as part of a class action lawsuit, alleging that the company had abandoned or reduced the “lifetime” benefits that had been promised to Million Mile Flyers before the merger.
