About Consumer Value Stores
Previously known by its full name, Consumer Value Stores, CVS Pharmacy was a division of Melville Corporation. After selling off many of its non-pharmacy stores, Melville rebranded itself as CVS Corporation in 1996. In 1997, the company sold off its remaining non-drugstore operations.
“Convenience, Value, and Service” is what former CEO Tom Ryan claimed “CVS” stood for.
Many CVS stores did not have pharmacies when the company was a regional chain in the Northeast. The company now rarely constructs new stores without pharmacies and is phasing out any existing ones outside of New England. Any new non-pharmacy store is typically constructed in an urban area, such as downtown Boston, Massachusetts, or Providence, Rhode Island, where there is already another CVS with a pharmacy nearby. The majority of the general merchandise items that a typical CVS Pharmacy carries, such as food, sundries, and health and beauty products, are carried by these stores, which typically lack a pharmacy and a photo centre.
The CVS Reward Programme
When customers filled their prescriptions at CVS, they could receive up to $50 in ExtraCare Bucks annually as a reward. This programme was launched in 2013. Customers had to sign a HIPAA waiver acknowledging that “my health information may potentially be re-disclosed and thus is no longer protected by the federal Privacy Rule” in order to enrol in the programme. Each week, stores in the programme had to meet a quota of customers. Although they do not need a signed HIPAA waiver, Walgreens and Rite Aid also provide rewards for filling prescriptions.
Founder
Three Goldsteins—Sidney, Stanley, and Ralph Hoagland—founded CVS in 1963. “Consumer Value Stores” was the term they gave it. Both the entire phrase and the acronym were displayed in the store’s original 1964 logo. Though people didn’t really understand what the three letters “CVS” stood for, they eventually came to associate them with a one-stop shop for cosmetic and health products as well as one of the most reputable companies in America. Consequently, the well-known “CVS/pharmacy” logo actually signifies that “this store is both a pharmacy and a consumer value store.”
However, there may be other options! One of CVS’s previous CEOs, Tom Ryan, read the three letters in a different way, according to Encyclopedia.com. From 1998 until 2011, Ryan served as CEO and made a commitment to manage the business using three “benchmarks”: convenience, value, and service. He asserted that there was another way to understand the acronym. Discover the meaning of this little-known acronym for a different well-known company: H.M.
It’s interesting to note that the acronym has changed along with the CVS brand. It is essentially a Consumer Value Store that emphasises Convenience, Value, and Service; however, we don’t think the names sound quite the same.
