China Phone Number, Get a Different Area Code, Calling Clarified

China Phone Number: The Chinese Telephone Code Plan governs the assignment of phone numbers in the People’s Republic of China. Mobile and landline phone numbers have different number structures. Mobile phone numbers lack area codes, while landline numbers do. An eight-digit local number and a two-digit area code make up major city landline numbers. In other places, landline numbers consist of a three-digit area code followed by a seven- or eight-digit local number.

The area code is not needed when calling landlines in the same area. Calls to other areas require dialling both the area code and the trunk prefix 0.

If they are not in the same area, you must add the “0” before the mobile phone number when calling it from a landline. The “0” and the area code are necessary if the landline and mobile phone are not in the same place. Outside of mainland China, mobile-to-mobile calls do not require the “0”.

Mobile phones

Except 140–144, which are 13-digit IoT numbers, mobile phone numbers in mainland China have eleven digits in the format 1xx-XXXX-XXXX, with the first three digits (13x to 19x) designating the mobile phone service provider.

Mobile phones used 6-digit numbers that began at nine before being upgraded to 7-digit numbers before GSM. They shared the same phone numbering scheme as landlines. These numbers were eventually replaced with 1390xx9xxx, where xx denoted the local identification.

China Mobile’s GSM numbers with ten digits began with 139 in 1994 and went on to 138 in 1997, 137, 136, and 135 in 1999. The oldest China Unicom numbers are the second oldest, starting at 130 in 1995 and ending at 131 in 1998. Retaining the same number over time is largely dependent upon how stable and reliable the owner is. Sometimes there is a relationship between age and location and the fifth through seventh digit.
