History

The origins of NYSEG may be traced to the 1850s when the Ithaca Gas Company was founded by six local businessmen. The business saw numerous advancements and changes throughout the ensuing 70 years. It had stabilised by 1937 when it accounted for about 35 per cent of the state. It continues to do so still.

Larger steam-generating facilities were bought and metres were implemented in the early years of NYSEG. The use of methane gas, for instance, increased gradually, and services went from being available exclusively. Generators with coal and diesel fuel were constructed. Even though NYSEG handled the day-to-day management of the company. General Public Utilities Corporation, the holding company, held ultimate political power. This was altered in 1949 when General Public Utilities Corporation became an independent. Investor-owned utility by selling all 880,000 of its business shares to the general public. More construction and expansion occurred, and by 1960, earnings had surpassed $100 million.

Throughout the following 50 years, there will be more significant changes and advancements. By the 1990s, NYSEG had shifted its attention to helping customers who were poor or disabled get help paying their electricity bills and navigating the social assistance system. Next, using the “NYSEG 2000: A Vision for the Future” programme, the corporation evaluated its growth potential. Following that, it evaluated its possibilities and chose to focus on the natural gas industry. A subsequent version of the plan called for “aggressive marketing, a focus on adding new franchises and various service activities closely related to natural gas distribution, coupled with a continued effort to reduce purchased natural gas costs.”
