NIIT History
NIIT was established in 1981 by IIT Delhi graduate Rajendra S. Pawar and Vijay K. Thadani did it with ten lakh rupees. NIIT first conceived the franchising model in IT education, establishing nine centers by 1987. And In 1986, NIIT began its foray into the software domain, beginning with software product distribution under the ‘Insoft’ brand. The company also began advising and mentoring large corporations on how to leverage technology and make the most of their IT investments.
In 1988, NIIT introduced advertising strategies for the Indian market, including ‘Computerdrome’ in 1990. Another initiative launched by NIIT was its Bhavishya Jyoti Scholarship Program, launched in 1991, targeted at deserving and socially challenged students. Aiming to improve their skills and employability quotient.
In 1992, NIIT launched GNIIT’s flagship program GNIIT, an industry-approved course with 12 months of professional practice for students seeking careers in the IT and non-IT sectors. By 1993, NIIT stock started trading on Indian stock exchanges. In 1996, NIIT began its globalization journey, establishing an education center in Hong Kong. In the same year, the company launched its virtual university ‘University’. And in 1998, NIIT joined a handful of Indian tech companies to enter the Chinese market. The company earned the title of ‘McDonald’s of the Software Business’ by the Far Eastern Economic Review in September 2001. In the same year, NIIT launched an experiment that was dubbed ‘hole-in-the-wall’ by the media and was received internationally. Care. This suggested that children, regardless of their social, ethnic, or educational identity, could learn to use computers on their own, without adult intervention. In 2003, NIIT started its MindChampions Academy (MCA) with five-time former World Chess Champion and NIIT Brand Ambassador Viswanathan Anand.
